How Often Should I Bathe My Dog?
Most dogs do best with a bath every 4–6 weeks, but the right frequency depends on coat type and lifestyle.
General guideline
For most dogs, bathing every 4 to 6 weeks keeps their skin and coat healthy without stripping natural oils. Bathing too often can dry out the skin and actually cause more shedding and irritation.
By coat type
- Short, smooth coats (Labrador, Beagle): every 6–8 weeks, or as needed.
- Double coats (Golden Retriever, Husky): every 4–6 weeks; more frequent brushing matters more than bathing.
- Curly/wool coats (Poodle, Doodles): every 3–4 weeks, often alongside regular grooming appointments.
- Oily or wrinkly-skinned breeds (Basset Hound, Bulldog): may need baths every 2–4 weeks, plus wrinkle cleaning in between.
When to bathe more often
- Your dog rolled in something (mud, another animal's waste, etc.)
- They spend a lot of time outdoors or swimming
- They have a skin condition your vet is treating with medicated shampoo
- Allergy season is causing extra itchiness — regular rinsing can help remove allergens from the coat
When to bathe less often
Puppies under 8 weeks generally shouldn't be fully bathed (spot-clean instead), and dogs with dry or sensitive skin may do better with longer gaps between baths, using a moisturizing dog-specific shampoo.
If your dog has ongoing itching, odor, or skin issues despite regular bathing, it's worth a vet visit — that can point to allergies or an underlying skin condition rather than just needing more frequent washing.
